It’s STILL ON!

I started gathering outfits this afternoon for the Ireland/London trip.

So far I have:

  • Dark brown three quarter sleeved jacket, shell, and pants (with turquoise necklace and belt)
  • Dark brown top with embellishment and dark brown lace cami (goes with dark brown pants)
  • Dark brown 3/4 ruched sleeve top (goes with dark brown pants, with orange necklace and bracelet)
  • Midnight blue long walking shorts (goes with medium blue jacket and shell, Midnight blue jacket, purple 3/4 sleeved top, and with printed chiffon tunic)
  • Medium blue short sleeved jacket and shell
  • Printed chiffon three quarter sleeved tunic (with dark brown lace cami under, and goes with blue walking shorts, or dark brown pants)
  • Brown tones paisley jacket and shell (goes with dark brown pants, or shell with dark brown jacket and dark brown pants)
  • Printed long skirt (goes with dark brown 3/4 sleeved top, or with medium blue shell and jacket, or with dark brown lace cami and dark brown jacket)
  • Black pants (go with chiffon tunic, purple 3/4 sleeve top, paisley shell, blue tops)
  • Bronze twin set (goes with black pants, dark brown pants)
  • French Terry lounging pants and 3/4 sleeved top for evenings before bedtime hanging around hotel rooms
  • Pajamas (2 pair)
  • Bronze sandals, black sneakers, and maybe purple dress sandals if they go with enough outfits
  • Underoos and sundries
  • Now I’m going to break this list of outfits down into pants, tops, dressy, casual, and miscellaneous.

…and it’s all gonna fit into THIS:

  • …which is 22″ by 14″ by 9″ and weighs 3.52 pounds when empty. It converts into a backpack with padded straps and waist belt. It is an MEI Voyageur, available online.

    Oh, ….It’s ON now.

I’ve made countless visits to ONEBAG.COM since I started planning this trip back in November of 2009. Not sure that I could actually do this…pack for a 17 day trip to two countries, stay in a few upper end hotels and castles, have a few gourmet dinners in fine dining settings, and spend five days and nights in London on the backside…and pack one carry-on sized bag. The closest I’ve come in the past is a 7 night Carribean cruise where I managed with just a backpack of clothing, including “formal night” wear. The photos were lost in a computer crash years ago, and I did have to purchase a T-shirt to sleep in since I forgot my pajamas. My sister was along, with her gigantic suitcase, and she can verify my backpack only trip.

    It’s ON now, though.

My daughter took my preaching the gospel of Doug Dyment to heart this past weekend and sent me a photo essay, complete with commentary, of her efforts to also become a One Bagger.

    I think I can beat her carry-on weight of 28 pounds…
    stay tuned.

    Ightham (pronounced “item”)

Whilst looking for that “out of London, quaint village” place, I came across Ightham and Ightham Mote. It’s a very do-able distance, and we have Derek Tarr to get us there and back to the Montague on the Gardens in Bloomsbury!

We’ll be ready-to-roll in Derek’s mini-coach at 9 AM. We’ll motor out of London and visit Ightham Mote first, then lunch at The George & Dragon Pub on our way through Ightham Village. Ightham Mote was first lived in by Sir Thomas Cawne from 1340 until his death in 1374 and the Great Hall dates from this period. Thereafter, it passed through various owners until it was bought in 1591 by Sir William Selby whose family lived there, for the next three hundred years. In 1953 the Mote was bought by an American, Henry Robinson, from Portland, Maine, who had first been attracted to it while on a cycle tour as a young man. He died in 1985, having bequeathed the Mote to the National Trust.

After lunch we will head over to Hever Castle, once owned by the Humphrey family…possible ancestors of ours! Hever Castle is the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, beheaded at the Tower by order of her husband, King Henry VIII.
